Lugalo secondary school Description
Lugalo Secondary school is a government secondary school located within Iringa municipality about one kilometer from Iringa bus station along Dodoma road. It started in 1945 with 200 students and 12 teachers under H.H. Aga – Khan. In 1967, it was nationalized under government ownership. The numbers of students increased to 500.
In 1988 the double session system was introduced. This enabled the school to register more than 1,000 students, with equal number of girls and boys encompassing forms one to four. Advanced level started in 2001 with HGL and HGK combinations. To date, the school has 251 A level students. As from the year 2006, the school started to register girls only for the Advanced level studies.
The school also has a unit for blind students as a way to help them get education. It was officially established in 1995. There are 26 visually handicapped students of which 25 are girls and one a boy. There is a specialist teacher helping the learning process of these blind students.
Lugalo began computer literacy programs in 2007 with instructions for teachers. In 2008, students began taking courses. Also in 2008, Lugalo became the first school to participate in videoconferencing activities with the US, establishing a sister school relationship with Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, Florida. This program has become wonderfully successful for students at both schools, and it is the model for all plans to expand the program to more schools in the future.
