Nganza Secondary School Description
Nganza Girls High School was built around 1960, associated with the Nyegezi Social Training Institute created by the Catholic White Fathers (now called the Missionaries of Africa). In 1992, the NSTI Training Centre became St. Augustine University, now the largest private university in Tanzania.
The High School—so designated (to further confuse Americans) because is accepts only “A” Level students—is now operated by the government. It selects 640 gifted students from all over Tanzania on the basis of O level exam results. Since the students come long distances, it is typical for “A” level schools to be boarding schools and, for that reason, they are restricted to single sex. For the girls, they must be a very different environment from home and, for us, worlds apart from Phillips Academy Andover and Kents Hill School, where each of us has worked.
