Source-Based Tasks in Life Orientation Grade 12
A source-based task is an essay that is based on an appropriate source of information. In life orientation, source-based tasks are used to help learners engage with a variety of texts to source information about a given topic. There are two types of source-based tasks that you’ll work on within your life orientation grade 12 course.
- Discussion-Based Tasks – These tasks are used to engage learners in group discussions about the topic under discussion. The focus is on the interaction between the group members and their understanding of the topic.
- Source-Based Tasks – These tasks focus on the interaction between the learner and the source of information. The source could be a book, an article, or a film. The learner is supposed to understand the content and extract information from the source.
The Life Orientation Source Based Task (SBA) is a compulsory component of the National Senior Certificate (NSC). It is a summative assessment that contributes 20% to the final mark for Life Orientation.
The SBA requires learners to conduct research on a life orientation theme and to communicate their findings in an organized manner. The purpose of the SBA is to provide opportunities for learners to:
- apply knowledge, skills and values in real-life situations;
