University of KwaZulu-Natal General Courses Requirements
Undergraduate UKZN courses Requirements
For admission to undergraduate degree studies applicants must be in possession of:
- Either the National Senior Certificate for degree studies (NSC-Deg); OR
- Senior Certificate with endorsement (obtained before 2008). For admission to undergraduate diploma studies, applicants must possess:
- Either the National Senior Certificate for diploma studies (NSC-Dip); OR
- The Senior Certificate (obtained before 2008);
- In addition, as the medium of instruction at UKZN is English, a minimum of either is required: » Level 4 pass in English as Home Language (HL) or First Additional Language (FAL) for NSC; OR
- A 50% (D) pass in English HG as First or Second Language for Senior Certificate.
- NSC applicants must have obtained a Level 4 pass in Life Orientation. In addition, programmes at UKZN have set their own entrance requirements based on overall performance in final examinations as well as performance in required subjects.
For NSC-Deg
The overall level of performance is reflected in an applicant’s Academic Performance Score (APS). Information on how to calculate APS appears on page 17.
The subjects and levels of performance required for admission to specific programmes are listed in the tables on pages 20 to 25. For Senior Certificates Please consult with colleges for information on scores, calculation values, and subject passes required.
International Applicants
Applicants with non-South African school-leaving certificates must apply to the South African Matriculation
Board/Universities South Africa (USAF) for certification stating that the school qualifications they hold satisfy the basic legal requirements for entry into degree studies in South Africa.
In addition to meeting the basic legal requirements, applicants must meet the entry requirements for specific programmes; that is passes in certain subjects and passes obtained, for example, in HIGSCE, AS, or A levels. Postgraduate UKZN courses Requirements
Postgraduate Diplomas (NQF 8) Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor’s degree; OR
- Admission to the status of that degree in terms of Rule GR7 (a); OR
- Attained a level of competence as defined by Rule GR7 (b);
- A School/College may prescribe further criteria for admission to study. Consult College

- Some Schools/Colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.
Bachelor of Honours Degrees (NQF 8) Requirements
